What is Restoration?

Jewelry restoration is the act of returning a piece of jewel to its like new condition. In addition, restoration involves preserving a piece against any additional disrepair.  There is a big difference between restoring and repairing a piece of jewelry.  Returning wear ability to a piece is the point of a repair but restoring a piece properly is an art form. When vintage jewelry needs restoration, your goal should be to preserve all the work that is good. While restoring what is missing or broken so it blends seamlessly with the original piece.

Jewelry restoration can involve several technical steps in order to bring a piece of antique jewelry back to it's original condition.  Many different techniques are used to restore jewelry, they may include:  cleaning, polishing, replacing lost stones, repairing broken and worn prongs, thickening bezel walls, fixing bent worn or broken shanks, engraving, applying filigree or mille graining and even removing and correcting incorrect repairs.
